‘Reader, I Married Him’ edited by Tracy Chevalier (in conjunction with Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre)

Genre: Fiction/Short Story Collection
I spotted this little nugget in Glebe one afternoon and I’ve been looking forward to reading it.

Reader, I Married Him is a collection of 21 short stories inspired by Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre. The book is titled after Bronte’s famous line from the novel, “Reader, I married him”.

Each story is unique and provides a different perspective about the story and its characters.

Who do I think will like this? Jane Eyre lovers (obviously), gothic romance fans, historical fiction fans and writers interested in how to structure the perfect short story.

Stories from the past, stories from the future, it’s definitely an eclectic mix.

The authors included are:
Tracy Chevalier, author of ‘Girl With The Pearl Earring’
Tessa Hadley
Sarah Hall
Helen Dunmore
Kirsty Gunn
Joanna Briscoe
Jane Gardam
Emma Donoghue, author of ‘Room’
Susan Hill
Francine Prose
Elif Shafak
Evie Wyld
Patricia Park
Salley Vickers, author of ‘Cousins’
Nadifa Mohamed
Esther Freud
Linda Grant, author of ‘Upstairs At The Party’
Lionel Shriver, author of ‘We Need To Talk About Kevin’
Audrey Niffenegger
Namwali Serpell

Elizabeth McCracken

Can Jane Eyre be replicated or is it best to leave well enough alone? I’d love to know what you think!
