About

In the growing world where mental health awareness is becoming more prominent, it can be difficult to navigate the vast array of books on the market about the topic. What’s the difference between psychology and counselling? Overall well-being? Mindfulness and meditation practice techniques? What about lifestyle books? The topic cannot be simplified into a single shelf in a bookstore, and nor should it, because our histories, our mental states and our lifestyles are uniques to our experiences.

I’ve studied psychology for the past five years, worked in mental health for three years and on the path to being a registered psychologist in Australia.

Every month I review books for ABC radio on the 702 program ‘Overnights’. This fantastic job started while I was working at my local bookshop during university.

For the past four years, while I’ve been with ABC I’ve had the luxury of choosing the books I review…they can be best sellers, new releases or just personal favourites.

2020 is a new year and a new decade and I’ve decided to merge my two passions- psychology and literature. I’m hoping that my experience and understanding of mental health will give me a holistic perspective to books out there.

I’ll be taking the term ‘mental health’ and ‘well-being’ and not locking it down to definitions. Rather, I will review books from the perspective of the impact they can have on someone’s life- albeit whatever facet of life that takes.

Sometimes I interview authors about their new books coming out, this is a lot of fun and gives my reviews greater depth and insight.
